Alion Science and Technology delivers technical expertise and operational support to the United States Department of Defense, civilian government agencies and commercial clients. Alion is 100% employee-owned, and has been recognized for many prestigious awards and mentions, including a top GSA vendor for several consecutive years.
As a tech services company, Alion is well-versed in all technology. However, after building the initial prototype Alion concluded it would be more efficient to enlist an enterprise level mobile application expert who could build a long-term scalable and maintainable solution.
The mobile application device would help the DoD automate and optimize its existing process - a highly manual, paper intensive tracking and inventory system for its assets. An electronic process using handheld, mobile technology and 2D bar code scanning would increase efficiency. Alion turned to Amadeus Consulting for help with development as they knew we are a serious software development company with a highly-skilled and knowledgeable team.
As a company that embraces challenge, Amadeus Consulting was eager to develop a solution for such an important process. The information that is mandated by the DoD for tracking these assets is complex. It was through a very close partnership, leveraging Alion's extensive understanding of the business domain, that Amadeus Consulting was able to create a working solution to meet the needs of the DoD.
Amadeus Consulting created an easy-to-use mobile application with a positive user experience for military use. Designing a good, stable mobile platform for the military is different than designing one for commercial purposes, and we exceeded Alion's expectations using 2D barcode scanning and Windows Mobile. A 2D barcode is a square image that allows complex data to be encoded in a relatively small space, which worked well for the large amount of information in a compact format that must be known about a pallet of DoD assets.
Alion was able to deploy the first phase of this application for the DoD in April 2009, and Amadeus Consulting continues to develop enhancements and follow on work throughout its successful partnership with Alion.
